IMAlive: newly available chat hotline for those in crisis

While we mostly receive questions about renewing library books, doing research, or learning about new things, we have occasionally gotten chats from customers who were in crisis.

In 2008, to better arm our librarians to handle these sensitive situations, we created training, guidelines and a resource list with the help of Jennifer Blunt in Caroline County, one of our librarians who’s also a social worker.

Crisis Call Guidelines

Although they happen rarely, we occasionally receive crisis calls through AskUsNow!. These may be suicide calls or calls that indicate some sort of abuse or threat is involved.

Examples

"My boyfriend punches me"

"There is a bomb in a locker"

"My father was touching me"
